Function of Down The Hole Drill Bits
Down The Hole drill bits function by transmitting impact energy from the DTH hammer to the cutting face of the bit, where the rock is broken and fragmented. The operational process of DTH drill bits can be summarized as follows:
Impact Energy Transfer: When the DTH hammer strikes the top of the drill bit, high-impact energy is transferred through the drill string to the bit's cutting face. This energy is concentrated on the tungsten carbide inserts, initiating the drilling process.
Rock Penetration: The tungsten carbide inserts on the cutting face of the drill bit exert high pressure on the rock formation, causing it to fracture and break apart. The rotational motion of the drill string helps in further dislodging the rock fragments.
Cutting and Clearing: As the drill bit rotates and advances into the rock formation, the tungsten carbide inserts continue to cut and pulverize the rock. Simultaneously, the flushing system of the drill bit clears the borehole by removing cuttings and debris.
Borehole Formation: Through the combined action of impact energy, cutting, and flushing, the DTH drill bit creates a borehole of the desired diameter and depth in the rock formation. The efficient performance of the drill bit ensures smooth drilling progress.
Repeat Drilling Cycles: The drilling process with DTH drill bits involves repeating drilling cycles of impact, cutting, and clearing until the desired borehole depth is achieved.
